Mid-air Collisions

Presented at the 2024 Klima Biennale Wien, Mid-air Collisions reflects on the interaction between the environment and the infrastructure of renewable energy sources. At Ivanpah, a concentrated solar power plant in California’s Mojave Desert, sunlight is reflected by more than 170,000 motorised mirrors, reaching temperatures of up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit—attracting insects and birds that perish in the intense heat. Kathrin Stumreich recorded observations of thermal activity and animal behaviour around the solar facility.

Apresentada na Bienal do Clima de Viena 2024, a instalação Mid-air Collisions reflete sobre a interação entre o ambiente e as infraestruturas de fontes de energia renováveis. Em Ivanpah, uma central solar concentrada no deserto Mojave nos EUA, a luz solar é refletida por mais de 170.000 espelhos motorizados, podendo atingir temperaturas até 1.000 graus Celcius, atraindo insetos e pássaros que morrem com o calor intenso. Kathrin Stumreich registou observações da atividade térmica e do comportamento animal em torno da central solar.
