To the Valley Below reflects Popham's view of the exploitation and resistance of the communities of Valsusa, an Alpine region marked throughout history by conflicts arising from its strategic position between Italy and the rest of Europe. The current mega-infrastructures, which have a significant environmental impact, reflect the conflicts between central power and local interests, and contextualise a fractured landscape and the resilience of its people.
